What is a helical gearbox, and when should you choose another type?

In a helical gear the teeth are cut at an angle to the shaft, so contact between teeth starts at one end and spreads across the face. This makes the drive smoother and quieter than straight-cut gears, and allows higher loads and speeds. Gearboxes are built as parallel-shaft units or, with bevel gears, as right-angle units, in one or several stages for the ratio required.

Helical Gearbox or worm gearbox? A helical gearbox is more efficient, runs cooler and suits continuous heavy duty, but it takes more stages for large ratios and costs more. A worm gearbox is compact and gives a large ratio in one stage, at lower efficiency.

Why are helical gears quieter than spur gears?

Because the angled teeth engage gradually rather than all at once, the load is transferred smoothly and there is less impact. The drive runs more quietly and smoothly.

What is the efficiency of a helical gearbox?

It is high for a gear drive, with only small losses per stage, and so it is a good choice where running cost and heat matter. Ask the maker for the figure for the model you want.
