What to settle before you ask for a quote

General guidance from SourceLoka for aluminium extrusion; it is not this company’s specification.

  • The profile drawing, with tolerances and the critical dimensions.
  • Alloy and temper, and the properties needed.
  • Surface finish: mill, anodised or powder coated, with thickness and colour.
  • Lengths, cutting and any machining or punching required.
  • Die cost and ownership, and the lead time to first samples.
  • Quantity per order and per year, packing and delivery.
What is an aluminium extrusion, and when should you choose another type?

A heated aluminium billet is forced through a steel die by a press, emerging as a long profile with the shape of the die opening. The profile is cooled, stretched straight, cut to length and aged to its temper. Extrusions can be solid, hollow or semi-hollow, and are finished by anodising, powder coating or painting. Alloys such as 6063 are common for architectural and decorative profiles, and 6061 for structural uses.

Aluminium Extrusion or rolled sheet or die casting? Extrusion gives long, constant-section profiles with complex shapes and low tooling cost. Rolled sheet is flat and is then formed or fabricated, and die casting makes complex three-dimensional shapes in volume but needs expensive dies.

What is the cost of an extrusion die?

It is a one-off charge that depends on the complexity of the profile and the die size. Ask for the die cost, who owns it and how many tonnes it can typically produce before replacement.

What does T5 or T6 temper mean?

The letters and numbers describe the heat treatment and ageing of the alloy, which set its strength and hardness. T6 is generally stronger than T5, so choose the temper for the loads.
