Kutch and Gandhidham Manufacturing: Steel, Pipes and Port-Linked Industry

What industry in Kutch makes, from steel pipes to engineering units in the Kandla SEZ, how port access shapes sourcing, and how to qualify suppliers there.

Editorial note: This guide explains a practical sourcing process. Requirements vary by product and destination; confirm regulatory, tax, legal and customs questions with qualified professionals.

Why Kutch matters

Kutch, in western Gujarat, is a large district with an industrial pattern different from Rajkot or Ahmedabad. The Ministry of MSME’s district survey notes that industrial concentration spread towards Bhachau, Mundra and Anjar after 2001, and lists Bhuj, Mundra, Anjar, Gandhidham and Mandvi as industrial talukas. Its list of large units is dominated by steel, steel pipes, power, cement and chemicals rather than small engineering shops.

Proximity to the Kandla and Mundra ports is the common thread. Companies here often make heavy or export-oriented products, and many supply energy, oil and gas, and infrastructure customers.

Steel and pipes

Anjar and the surrounding area host several steel and pipe producers named in the district survey and on company websites, including makers of large-diameter welded pipe and stainless seamless and welded tube. Stainless pipe and tube production is also located near Bhuj–Bhachau and Gandhidham.

If you buy pipe or tube from this region, define the grade, specification, dimensional tolerance and test requirements, and ask for mill test certificates for each lot. For regulated pressure applications, confirm the third-party inspection you will accept and who arranges it.

Engineering units in the Kandla SEZ

The Kandla Special Economic Zone at Gandhidham lists engineering units that include makers of gas cylinders, process and fabricated equipment, stainless products, fasteners and bearings, alongside many plastics, textile and chemical units. The official working-unit list is public but dated, so treat it as a starting point and check whether a unit is still operating.

SEZ units are oriented to export and have their own customs procedures. If you plan to buy from one, ask whether the unit sells in the domestic tariff area and how that affects duties and paperwork.

Fabrication and tank work

Tanks, pressure vessels and process equipment for terminals and plants are made by fabricators in and around Gandhidham. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation publishes lists of approved pressure-vessel shops, which is a useful check where that approval applies.

For fabricated work, ask for welding procedures, welder qualifications, material traceability and the testing to be witnessed. Confirm where the work will be fabricated, since a company’s head office and shop can be in different places.

Logistics and delivery

Port access is an advantage for export orders and bulky goods, but inland delivery within India can involve long road distances. Agree who arranges transport and insurance, who is responsible for loading and securing heavy items, and when risk passes.

For export, involve your freight forwarder before the first shipment and confirm which party files shipping documents.

Qualifying a supplier

Confirm the legal entity, factory location, registrations and certificates, and match them to the quotation. For larger companies, annual reports and stock-exchange filings can add useful context. For smaller firms, ask for machine lists, inspection records and references.

SourceLoka lists Kutch companies using public sources such as government lists and company websites. Entries are not independently verified, and some have only an address and category. Use them to find candidates and confirm details directly.
