What are pumps?

Pumps move liquids by adding pressure or flow. The main families are centrifugal pumps, which spin an impeller, and positive-displacement pumps, which trap and push a fixed volume. Pumps are chosen by the liquid, the flow and the head, and the right pump for water is rarely the right pump for chemicals, slurry or oil.

How to choose

  1. Define the duty point: the flow you need and the total head, including lift, pipe friction and delivery height. Select the pump on this point, not on horsepower alone.
  2. Describe the liquid completely: temperature, solids, corrosiveness, density and viscosity. These decide the pump type and materials.
  3. Choose the type: centrifugal for large flows of clean or lightly contaminated liquid, positive-displacement for high pressure, thick liquids or accurate dosing, submersible where the pump must work below the liquid.
  4. Check the efficiency at the duty point and the shape of the curve, since a pump working away from its best point wastes energy and wears faster.
  5. Select materials of the casing, impeller, shaft and seals for the liquid, and confirm the type of shaft seal and how leakage is handled.
  6. Check the motor rating and drive, the electrical supply and the protection and control you need.
  7. Ask about spares, repair facilities and warranty, and the make of bearings and seals so that repairs are practical.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose between a centrifugal and a positive-displacement pump?

Choose centrifugal for large flows of clean or lightly contaminated liquid at moderate pressure. Choose positive-displacement for high pressure, thick or shear-sensitive liquids and accurate metering.

What is cavitation and how do I avoid it?

Cavitation is the formation and collapse of vapour bubbles when pressure at the impeller inlet is too low. It causes noise, vibration and damage. Avoid it with correct suction pipework and by checking the pump’s required suction head.

Why does a pump lose performance over time?

Wear on the impeller and wear rings, a blocked suction or a change in the system head are common causes. Compare current performance with the original curve and inspect the pump.

What information should I send for a quote?

The liquid and its temperature, the flow and the total head, the suction arrangement, the power supply and the materials you prefer. If you can, send a sketch of the pipework.

Can I contact the manufacturers listed here directly?

Yes. Each listing shows the contact details the company has published, with no lead form or middleman. Confirm the pump curve, materials and service with the company before ordering.
