What are diesel & oil engine spares?

Diesel and oil engine spares are the wearing and replacement parts of small and medium engines used in pump sets, generators, tractors, boats and farm machinery: cylinder liners, pistons and rings, crankshafts, valves and guides, rocker arms and air-cooled blocks. Fit and metallurgy decide how long an overhauled engine lasts, so the part must match the engine exactly and be made from the right material.

How to choose

  1. Identify the engine precisely: make, model, bore, stroke, cooling type and serial range. Many parts look alike and differ by fractions of a millimetre.
  2. Ask whether the part is made to the engine maker’s drawing or copied from a worn sample. Dimensions taken from a worn part are usually wrong.
  3. Check the material and hardness of liners, rings and valves, and whether liners are centrifugally cast, since structure and wear resistance depend on it.
  4. Buy matched sets where they exist, such as liner, piston, rings and pin together, so clearances are controlled.
  5. Ask for a material test certificate and dimensional report for a sample from each batch, and for batch marking so a failure can be traced.
  6. Check packaging: bright machined surfaces corrode in transit unless oiled and wrapped.
  7. Start with a small order, fit it, and review wear and oil consumption before committing volume.

Frequently asked questions

Are aftermarket engine parts as good as original ones?

It depends on the maker. A part made to the engine maker’s drawing, in the right material and checked on a sample from each batch, can perform well. Ask for the material certificate and dimensional report and judge each supplier on its evidence.

Why do liners and pistons need to be matched?

The clearance between piston and liner controls compression, oil consumption and wear. Parts supplied as a matched set keep that clearance within the intended range.

What should I send with an enquiry?

The engine make and model, the part name or number, a drawing or the old part if available, the quantity and the delivery location.

How do I check a spare part before fitting it?

Measure it against the drawing or the part it replaces, check the markings and material certificate, and inspect surfaces for casting or machining defects.
