What is a check valve (non-return valve)?

The flow itself pushes a disc, ball or plate open, and when the flow stops or reverses a spring or gravity closes it against the seat. The main types are swing, lift, dual-plate wafer and ball check valves. They are fitted on pump delivery lines, on process lines and in building services, to prevent reverse flow and to protect equipment.

Check Valve (Non-Return Valve) or isolation valve?

A check valve works automatically and only in one direction, so it cannot be used to isolate a section for maintenance. An isolation valve such as a gate or ball valve is operated by hand or actuator and shuts off both ways.

What to specify when you ask for a quote

  • Type: swing, lift, dual-plate or ball, chosen for the fluid, orientation and flow behaviour.
  • Size, pressure class and end connection.
  • Body and trim materials for the fluid and temperature.
  • Cracking pressure (the pressure needed to open it) and whether a spring assist is needed.
  • Installation orientation: horizontal, vertical flow up or down.
  • Design and test standard, and the certificates and spares available.

Where it is used

  • PumpsNon-return protection on pump delivery lines.
  • Water TreatmentPreventing back-flow in supply and treatment systems.
  • Oil & GasReverse-flow protection in process and pipeline systems.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a check valve be installed?

Commonly on the delivery side of a pump, between the pump and the isolation valve, and wherever reverse flow could damage equipment or contaminate a supply. Follow the supplier’s guidance on straight pipe length before and after.

What is water hammer and can a check valve cause it?

Water hammer is a pressure surge caused by a sudden change in flow. A check valve that slams shut when flow reverses can add to it, so fast-closing or spring-assisted designs are used in systems prone to surges.

Which type of check valve is best?

Swing types suit larger low-resistance lines, lift types suit smaller high-pressure lines, and dual-plate wafer types are compact and quick to close. The right choice depends on the fluid, line size, orientation and surge behaviour.
