The pump and a sealed motor are a single unit placed in the water of an open well, a pond or a tank, and a delivery pipe or hose carries the water out. Unlike a borewell pump, which is narrow and has many stages to lift from depth, an openwell pump has a wide body, usually a single impeller, and is built for high flow at low to moderate head.
An openwell pump is wide and moves a lot of water over a small height, and is designed for open wells. A borewell pump is slim and multistage, built to fit narrow boreholes and lift water from great depth.
When the water source is an open well, pond or tank, you need a large flow at low head and there is room for a wider pump. For a narrow borehole, choose a borewell pump.
No. Because the pump sits in the water, it fills by itself, which is a major advantage over surface pumps that must be primed.
Openwell pumps are designed for moderate heads, not great depth. Ask the maker for the head range and the performance curve for your duty.
Use a starter with dry-run and overload protection, and make sure the pump stays submerged. A falling water level is a common cause of damage.
