What is a reciprocating pump?

A piston or plunger draws liquid into a cylinder through a suction valve and then pushes it out through a delivery valve. Because each stroke displaces a set volume, the flow is nearly independent of the pressure, and the pump can reach very high pressures. The flow is pulsating, so surge dampeners are fitted. These pumps are used for high-pressure cleaning, boiler feed, hydraulic testing, dosing and oilfield duties.

Reciprocating Pump or centrifugal pump?

A reciprocating pump gives high pressure at modest flow and can handle thick liquids, but its flow pulsates and it has more wearing parts. A centrifugal pump gives smooth, large flows at moderate pressure with fewer moving parts.

What to specify when you ask for a quote

  • Required flow and discharge pressure, with the range of both.
  • Plunger or piston type, number of cylinders and stroke speed.
  • The liquid: temperature, solids, corrosiveness and viscosity.
  • Materials of the liquid end, valves and seals for that liquid.
  • Power, drive and the arrangement for reducing pulsation.
  • Maintenance: how seals and valves are replaced, and spares availability.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a reciprocating pump pulsate?

Each stroke delivers a pulse of liquid and there is a pause as the piston reverses. More cylinders and a pulsation dampener smooth the flow.

What liquids suit a reciprocating pump?

Clean liquids at high pressure, and with the right design some thick and abrasive liquids. Choose seal and valve materials for the liquid.

What is the difference between a piston and a plunger pump?

In a piston pump the seal moves with the piston inside the cylinder. In a plunger pump a plunger moves through a fixed seal, which suits higher pressure and is easier to maintain.

How do I protect it from over-pressure?

Fit a relief valve on the discharge side, since a positive-displacement pump can build pressure until something fails. Never close the discharge without a relief path.
