What is a screw conveyor?

A shaft carrying a helical flight turns inside a U-shaped trough or a tube, pushing the material along. The conveyor can run horizontally or at an incline, and can mix, meter or heat the material as it moves. Capacity depends on the screw diameter, the pitch, the speed and how full the trough is. Screw conveyors are enclosed, which controls dust and spillage.

Screw Conveyor or belt conveyor?

A screw conveyor is enclosed, compact and suits dusty, hot or sticky materials and short distances, but uses more power per tonne and wears. A belt conveyor moves large flows over long distances with less power and wear.

What to specify when you ask for a quote

  • The material: size, density, abrasiveness, moisture and stickiness.
  • Capacity, length and incline.
  • Screw diameter, pitch and the material and thickness of the flight and trough.
  • Drive: motor, gearbox and speed, and the starting arrangement.
  • Bearings and seals, hanger bearings for long runs and the sealing against dust.
  • Safety guards, access covers and inlet and discharge arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

What limits the length of a screw conveyor?

The torque on the shaft, the wear of the hanger bearings and the deflection of the screw. Long runs need intermediate bearings, and very long distances are better served by other types.

Can a screw conveyor run on an incline?

Yes, and capacity falls as the incline rises. Steep inclines need a tube and a higher speed, and the supplier can calculate it for your material.

Which materials are difficult for screw conveyors?

Very sticky, fibrous or abrasive materials and those that pack under pressure. Ask the supplier for guidance and, if possible, a trial.

How do I reduce wear?

Choose hardened or wear-resistant flights, keep the speed low for abrasive materials and avoid overloading. Plan for replacement of flights and liners.
