The workpiece is held on a table, often by a magnetic chuck, and moves back and forth beneath a rotating grinding wheel that removes a very small amount of material in each pass. Surface grinders finish flat faces after hardening, when cutting tools can no longer machine the material, and they achieve flatness and parallelism that milling cannot.
A milling machine removes metal quickly with a cutter and shapes complex forms, but its finish and accuracy are limited. A surface grinder removes metal slowly and finishes flat faces to very tight tolerance, usually after milling and hardening.
Flatness and parallelism of a few thousandths of a millimetre are possible on a good machine, though the result also depends on the wheel, the workpiece and the operator. Ask the maker for the guaranteed figures.
The wheel is chosen for the material, the finish and the machine, by abrasive type, grit size, hardness and bond. Wheel makers publish selection guides, and suppliers can advise.
Grinding creates heat that can distort the part or burn the surface. Coolant carries heat away and flushes out the fine swarf.
Yes, but they need to be held by other means, such as a vacuum chuck or clamps, since a magnetic chuck only holds ferrous materials.
