What is a thresher?
Harvested crop is fed into a drum that rotates inside a concave grid. The beating and rubbing action loosens the grain from the straw, and the grain falls through the grid while straw is carried out. Sieves and a blower then clean the grain of chaff. Threshers can be driven by a tractor power take-off or by an electric motor or engine, and different drums and screens suit different crops.

List your companyThresher or combine harvester?
A thresher separates grain from crop that has already been cut and brought to it, which suits smaller farms and lower cost. A combine harvester cuts, threshes and cleans the crop in the field in one machine, at much higher cost and capacity.

Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a thresher for my crop?
Tell the maker your crop and typical moisture. Wheat, paddy and pulses need different drum speeds and screens, and some machines can be adjusted or fitted with different parts.
Why does some grain get broken in threshing?
Drum speed that is too high, a wrong concave clearance or very dry crop can crack grain. Adjust the speed and clearance for the crop and moisture.
What safety rules matter most?
Keep guards in place on drums and drives, never feed crop by hand into moving parts without proper design and follow the maker’s instructions. Threshers cause serious injuries if misused.
What maintenance should I do?
Grease bearings, check belts and chains, inspect drum beaters and concaves for wear and clean the machine after use. Store it dry and covered.
