What are air compressors & blowers?

Air compressors supply compressed air for tools, packaging, painting and process equipment, while blowers move large volumes of air at low pressure for conveying, aeration and ventilation. Piston compressors suit intermittent small loads, rotary-screw machines suit continuous industrial use, and oil-free designs serve clean-air applications. Running cost dominates ownership: electricity for the motor over several years usually exceeds the purchase price, so efficiency, leaks in the pipework and correct sizing matter more than a small difference in price. A well-maintained system with sensible piping delivers the air you pay for.

How to choose

  1. Calculate demand: the free-air delivery you need and the pressure at the point of use, plus a margin for growth and for pressure drop in pipes.
  2. Choose the type by duty. Piston machines are economical for intermittent use; screw machines run continuously and are quieter and more efficient at steady load.
  3. Decide whether the air must be oil-free, as in food, pharma and electronics, rather than only filtered.
  4. Check the air receiver design and ask who certifies the pressure vessel.
  5. Look at drying and filtration: moisture and oil in the air damage tools and product.
  6. Compare motor efficiency and the control method, since running cost over the life exceeds the purchase price.
  7. Ask about spares, service intervals and the response time of local service.
  8. Check installation needs: ventilation, foundation, piping size and electrical supply, since a compressor in a hot or dusty room runs inefficiently and wears quickly.

Specifications to confirm with the supplier

SpecificationWhat to ask
Free-air delivery (FAD)Delivered volume at the working pressure, not just the displacement.
Working pressureRated and maximum pressure.
Motor power and efficiencyRating, efficiency class and starter type.
Air receiverVolume, design code and pressure-vessel certification.
Air qualityOil content, dryer type and filter grades.
Noise levelSound level and whether an enclosure is fitted.

Frequently asked questions

What is FAD and why does it matter?

Free-air delivery is the actual volume of air the compressor delivers at working conditions. It is the figure to compare, not the nominal capacity.

When do I need an oil-free compressor?

When even traces of oil in the air would harm the product or process, as in food, pharmaceutical and electronics work.

Is a bigger tank better?

A larger receiver smooths demand and reduces cycling, but it does not make a small compressor deliver more air.

How do I size a compressor for my plant?

Add up the air each tool or machine needs at its working pressure, include a margin for growth, and ask the supplier to confirm delivery at that pressure.

How can I reduce compressed-air running cost?

Fix leaks, match the compressor to demand, keep filters and separators clean, and lower the pressure to what the equipment actually needs.
