What are cooling towers?

A cooling tower rejects heat from process water or an air-conditioning plant to the atmosphere by evaporating a small part of the water. FRP (fibre-reinforced plastic) towers are the most common for industrial and building use, with timber and RCC towers for larger or older installations. Induced-draft counter-flow designs are widely used. Air-handling units (AHU) move conditioned air in buildings and plants. Performance depends on the design weather conditions, the fill and the fan.

How to choose

  1. Define the duty: circulating water flow, hot-water and cold-water temperatures (range), and the design wet-bulb temperature at your site.
  2. Choose the type: counter-flow towers are compact; cross-flow towers suit some pumping heads; FRP, timber or RCC structure by size and environment.
  3. Ask for the thermal design: fill type and area, air flow and fan power, and the approach to wet-bulb that the tower will achieve.
  4. Check material for the water quality: chemicals, chlorides and temperature affect the structure and fill.
  5. Review the fan, motor and gearbox or belt drive, including balance and vibration limits, since these need regular maintenance.
  6. Ask for drift loss and noise levels, especially in built-up areas.
  7. Agree the performance guarantee and how it will be tested, including who supplies instruments.
  8. Confirm spares, service and water-treatment advice to keep the tower efficient.
  9. Ask how the tower is delivered and assembled on site, and whether the supplier supervises erection and first start-up.

Frequently asked questions

What do range and approach mean?

Range is the difference between hot and cold water temperatures; approach is how close the cold water gets to the wet-bulb temperature. Both are needed to size a tower.

FRP, timber or RCC tower?

FRP is light, corrosion resistant and common for small and medium towers; RCC suits very large installations. Choose by size, water quality and site.

How is performance guaranteed?

By a performance test at agreed conditions. Agree the test method and the allowed tolerance before ordering.

Why does the wet-bulb temperature matter?

A tower cannot cool water below the wet-bulb temperature of the air. Design for the hottest, most humid conditions at your site.

How can I keep a tower efficient?

Treat the water, clean fill and basin, maintain fans and drives, and control blow-down as the supplier advises.
