What are dust collectors & pollution control?

Dust collectors and air-pollution control equipment capture dust, fumes and particles from factory and boiler exhaust before they reach workers or the atmosphere. Common types are bag-house and cartridge collectors, cyclones, wet scrubbers and fume extraction systems with ducts and fans. The right choice depends on the dust, the air volume and the emission limit you must meet. A collector only works as part of a system: hoods that capture dust at the source, ducts that carry it without settling, a collector sized for the air volume and a fan that overcomes the resistance. Weak design at any step lets dust escape however good the filter is, so ask for the whole system and not just the box.

How to choose

  1. Characterise the dust: particle size, temperature, moisture, abrasiveness and whether it is combustible or sticky.
  2. Calculate the air volume to be handled and the capture design at each source, since poor hoods defeat a good collector.
  3. Choose the technology. Bag filters and cartridges give high efficiency on dry dust; cyclones suit coarse dust or pre-cleaning; wet scrubbers suit fumes and some gases.
  4. Match the filter media to temperature and chemistry, and ask about the cleaning method and filter life.
  5. State the emission limit you must meet and ask the supplier to guarantee it at the stack, with the test method.
  6. Check the fan and motor, ducting design and pressure drop, which set running cost.
  7. Ask about explosion protection if the dust is combustible.

Frequently asked questions

Bag filter or cartridge collector?

Both filter dry dust well. Cartridges are compact for fine dust at modest volumes; bags suit larger volumes and rugged duty.

How is performance proved?

By measuring emissions at the outlet against the agreed limit, using an agreed method, after commissioning.

Why does the hood design matter?

If dust is not captured at the source, the collector never receives it. Capture design is as important as the collector.

How often do filters need replacing?

Filter life depends on the dust, temperature and cleaning method. A good supplier gives an expected life for your duty and the signs that replacement is due.

How do I know the collector is large enough?

Ask the supplier to show the air volume, filtration area and air-to-cloth ratio for your dust, and to guarantee the emission level after commissioning.
