What are hydraulic power packs & cylinders?

A hydraulic power pack combines a motor, pump, reservoir and valves to supply pressurised oil, and a hydraulic cylinder turns that oil pressure into linear force. Together they drive presses, lifts, tippers, machine tools and material-handling equipment. Most suppliers build to the buyer’s duty, so the enquiry must state force, stroke, speed and pressure. Because most units are built to order, the quality of the specification you send decides the quality of what you get. A clear duty description, a circuit sketch and agreed test steps avoid the most common disputes, which are undersized motors, leaking cylinders and wrong stroke lengths.

How to choose

  1. Start from the work: the force needed, the stroke, the speed of movement and how often it repeats. These set cylinder bore and pump flow.
  2. Choose working pressure sensibly. Higher pressure allows smaller cylinders but demands better seals, hoses and fittings.
  3. Size the motor and reservoir for the duty cycle. Continuous duty needs more oil volume and cooling than occasional use.
  4. Ask what the cylinder is made of, how the bore is finished, and whether the rod is hard-chrome plated and ground, since seal life depends on it.
  5. Check the seal brand and the valve and pump makes, because these are the parts you will need to replace.
  6. Ask for a pressure test on the finished unit and the test report.
  7. Confirm who supplies the circuit drawing and how quickly spares and service are available.

Frequently asked questions

What information does a supplier need to quote a power pack?

The force and stroke needed, the speed, the working pressure, the duty cycle, the power supply and any controls or safety features you require.

Why is rod finish important?

A smooth, hard rod surface protects the seals. A rough or damaged rod wears seals quickly and causes leaks.

Should the power pack be tested before dispatch?

Yes. Ask for a pressure test at the rated pressure and a written test record.

How often does a hydraulic system need maintenance?

Oil level, filter condition and leaks should be checked regularly, and oil and filters changed on the schedule the supplier gives for your duty.
