What are gears & gearboxes?

Gears transmit power and change speed and torque between shafts, and gearboxes package gears with shafts, bearings and a housing into a ready-to-fit unit. The group includes spur, helical, bevel and worm gears, industrial gearboxes, geared motors and sprockets.

How to choose

  1. Start from the duty: input power and speed, the output speed or ratio, the torque and the service factor for shock loads and hours of running per day.
  2. Choose the gear type for the layout and the duty: helical for efficiency and smooth running, worm for compact right-angle drives with large ratios, bevel for shafts that meet at an angle.
  3. Check the gear quality grade and the standard used, which decides noise, smoothness and life.
  4. Ask about materials and heat treatment, such as case hardening, and how the hardness and case depth are checked.
  5. Compare the lubrication arrangement, the oil type and quantity, and the cooling needed for your duty cycle.
  6. Check mounting position, shaft size and arrangement, and housing options, so the unit fits your machine.
  7. Ask about noise, efficiency and backlash figures, and the spares and service available.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between spur and helical gears?

Spur gears have straight teeth and are simple and cheap but noisier. Helical gears have angled teeth that engage gradually, so they run more smoothly and quietly and carry more load, with some side thrust.

What is a service factor?

A multiplier applied to the load to account for shock, starts and hours of running. A gearbox is selected so that its rating, after applying the service factor, covers the duty.

Why does a gearbox get hot?

Friction, an incorrect oil level or type, or overloading. Worm gearboxes run warmer than helical ones. Check the lubrication and the size of the unit for your duty.

How do I specify a gear?

Provide the drawing or module, number of teeth, pressure angle, face width, material, heat treatment, quality grade and the quantity.

How long should a gearbox last?

It depends on correct selection, lubrication and the duty. A gearbox sized with a suitable service factor, kept clean and filled with the right oil, and protected from overload, can run for many years. Ask the maker for the expected life at your duty.

Can I contact the manufacturers listed here directly?

Yes. Each listing shows the contact details the company has published, with no lead form or middleman. Confirm ratings, quality grade and service with the company before ordering.
