What are pressure vessels & heat exchangers?

Pressure vessels hold fluids under pressure, and heat exchangers transfer heat between fluids, typically shell-and-tube designs. Reactors, agitated tanks and storage tanks complete the group of fabricated process equipment used in chemicals, pharma, food and energy plants. Safety depends on design code, materials, welding quality and inspection. Because failure can injure people and stop a plant, the cheapest quotation is rarely the right basis for choosing. Compare design code, materials, welding qualification and inspection plans like for like, and make sure each supplier is quoting the same design pressure, temperature and scope.

How to choose

  1. State the process duty: fluid, design pressure and temperature, vacuum, corrosion and cleaning requirements.
  2. Specify the design code and who performs the design check, and whether third-party inspection is required.
  3. Choose materials for corrosion and temperature, and require material certificates with traceability to each plate and tube.
  4. Check welding procedures and welder qualifications, and the inspection planned: visual, dye-penetrant, radiography or ultrasonic.
  5. Confirm the hydraulic test pressure and that the test is witnessed and recorded.
  6. For heat exchangers, request the thermal design, tube layout and fouling allowance.
  7. Review surface finish and cleanability for food and pharma duty.
  8. Agree the documentation package early, including a data book, since regulators, insurers and your own maintenance team will ask for it after delivery. Plan transport and lifting for large vessels as well.

Specifications to confirm with the supplier

Design pressure and temperatureRated conditions plus margin and vacuum rating.
MaterialsGrades for shell, heads, tubes and gaskets, with certificates.
Welding and NDTProcedures, welder records and the NDT method and extent.
TestingHydrostatic test pressure and witness arrangements.
FinishInternal and external surface finish and passivation where needed.
DocumentationData book contents, drawings and certificates supplied at handover.
Nozzles and connectionsSize, rating and orientation of every connection against your piping.

Frequently asked questions

Why is traceability important for pressure equipment?

It links each pressure-bearing part to its material certificate, so you know what the vessel is made of and can investigate any failure.

Who should witness the hydrotest?

You or an independent inspector you appoint. The test pressure and result should be recorded in a signed report.

What does the supplier need to quote?

The duty, design pressure and temperature, fluid, materials, code, size and any inspection or documentation requirements.

How long should I expect a vessel to last?

Life depends on the fluid, temperature, corrosion allowance and maintenance. State the expected service life in the specification so the design allows for it.

What documents should I receive with a vessel?

Design calculations, drawings, material certificates, welding and NDT records, the hydrotest report and a data book that ties them together.
