This category covers drawn steel wire and the products made from it: wire rope, springs, wire mesh, fencing, nails and steel-reinforced cables. Wire is made by drawing rod through a series of dies, which sets its diameter and strength, and its coating and construction decide how it performs in service.
| Specification | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Steel grade and strength | The grade and the tensile strength range. |
| Diameter and tolerance | The size range and tolerance. |
| Coating | Type and thickness, and corrosion test results. |
| Construction | For rope: strands, wires, core and lay. |
| Breaking load | The minimum breaking load and the test method. |
| Packaging | Coil, spool or reel sizes and packing. |
| Certificates | Test certificates by lot. |
It is the maximum pull per unit area the wire can take before breaking. Higher strength wires can carry more load for the same diameter but are less ductile, so choose the strength that your product needs.
It is the ratio between the breaking load and the working load. The required factor depends on the application and the rules that apply, so follow your standard and the rope maker’s guidance.
A zinc layer on the surface protects the steel from corrosion, and the thicker the layer, the longer the protection. Ask for the coating weight and the corrosion test results.
The product type, the diameter and the strength or construction, the coating, the quantity and packing, and any standard or certificate you need.
Inspect it regularly for broken wires, corrosion, kinks, flattening and wear, lubricate it as advised and retire it when it reaches the limits in the applicable rules or the maker’s guidance. A damaged rope should never stay in service.
