Individual wires are twisted into strands, and several strands are laid around a core of fibre or steel to make the rope. The number and arrangement of strands and wires, the lay direction and the core all affect strength, flexibility and resistance to wear and crushing. Wire rope is galvanised or lubricated for protection and must be inspected and replaced when worn.
Steel wire rope is strong, resists abrasion and heat and gives warning of wear through broken wires. Chain is heavy but durable and suits short lifts, and synthetic rope is light and easy to handle but less resistant to cutting and heat.
Match it to the use. Ropes with many fine wires are more flexible and suit bending over small sheaves, while ropes with fewer, thicker wires resist abrasion better. Ask the maker for the construction suited to your equipment.
When broken wires, wear, corrosion, kinks or damage reach the limits set by the applicable rules or the maker. Inspect ropes regularly, and never keep a damaged rope in service.
The ratio between the minimum breaking load and the working load. The required factor depends on the application and the rules, so follow your standard.
Store it dry and covered, off the ground, and lubricate it as the maker advises to reduce internal wear and corrosion. Handle it to avoid kinks and damage.
