What are transformers & switchgear?

Transformers change voltage levels in power distribution, and switchgear and panels protect, control and distribute that power. Distribution and power transformers serve utilities and factories, dry-type units serve buildings, and MCC, PCC and control panels serve plants. Because failure is costly and dangerous, test evidence matters more than the brochure. Because a transformer or panel can run for decades and a failure can stop a plant, the cheapest quotation is often the costliest choice. Compare losses, test evidence, the make of critical components and the supplier’s service record, and make sure the specification matches the standard your electricity utility or consultant requires.

How to choose

  1. Define the electrical duty: rating, primary and secondary voltage, phases, frequency, impedance and tap range.
  2. Choose oil-filled or dry-type by location, fire-safety needs and maintenance capability.
  3. Ask for the applicable Indian or international standard the product is built and tested to.
  4. Request type-test and routine-test reports, ideally from an accredited laboratory, and ask which tests are done on every unit.
  5. Compare losses and efficiency, which affect running cost for the life of the transformer.
  6. For panels, check the busbar rating, short-circuit rating, enclosure protection and the make of breakers and relays.
  7. Confirm warranty terms, spares and service response.
  8. Check transport and installation: weight, dimensions, oil handling and commissioning tests, and agree who is responsible for each before the unit leaves the factory.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between type tests and routine tests?

Type tests prove a design on a representative unit; routine tests are carried out on each unit before dispatch. Ask for both.

Why do transformer losses matter?

A transformer is energised for years, so even a small difference in losses adds up to a significant cost over its life.

Dry-type or oil-filled?

Dry-type units avoid oil and suit indoor and fire-sensitive locations; oil-filled units are common for outdoor and higher ratings.

What documents should come with a transformer?

Test certificates for the unit, the rating plate details, drawings, an operation and maintenance manual and the warranty terms.

Should I inspect a transformer before dispatch?

If the order is large or critical, arrange a factory inspection and witness the routine tests, or appoint an independent inspector to do so.
