A round disc is mounted on a shaft across the bore of the valve. A quarter turn rotates the disc from lying along the flow, which is open, to across it, which is closed. Bodies are wafer, lug or flanged, and resilient seats give a tight seal on water and many liquids, while high-performance designs with metal seats handle higher temperatures and pressures.
A butterfly valve is much lighter, shorter and cheaper in large sizes and opens and closes quickly. A gate valve gives a clear, unobstructed bore when open, whereas the disc of a butterfly valve always sits in the flow.
A wafer valve is clamped between two pipe flanges by long bolts and is the lightest and cheapest. A lug valve has threaded lugs, so it can be bolted to one flange and allows one side of the pipe to be removed, which suits end-of-line use.
Yes, within limits. It is often used for throttling in large lines, but the disc stays in the flow, so check the flow characteristic and the position range with the supplier.
Rubber seats suit water and many general fluids, PTFE suits many chemicals, and metal seats suit high temperatures. Check the compatibility of the seat with your fluid.
