What is a control panel enclosure?

The enclosure is made from cut, bent and welded sheet, usually with a hinged door, a mounting plate for the equipment and cable entries. It is finished by powder coating or painting, and its protection against solids and water is described by an IP rating. Panels may include cooling fans, filters, door locks and gaskets, depending on the equipment inside and the environment.

Control Panel Enclosure or plastic enclosure?

A sheet-metal enclosure is strong, gives electromagnetic shielding, handles heat and can be made in any size, but it is heavier and can corrode. A plastic enclosure is light and corrosion-free and suits small, low-power applications.

What to specify when you ask for a quote

  • Dimensions, mounting style and the layout of the equipment inside.
  • Material and sheet thickness: mild steel, stainless steel or aluminium.
  • IP rating for the environment, such as dust and water exposure.
  • Finish: powder coating colour and thickness, and any corrosion protection.
  • Doors, locks, gaskets, ventilation and cable entry arrangements.
  • Earthing provisions, drawings and the inspection report.

Frequently asked questions

What does the IP rating of an enclosure mean?

The first digit rates protection against solid objects such as dust, and the second against water. Higher digits mean more protection. Choose the rating for where the panel will be installed.

What sheet thickness should I choose?

It depends on the size and the weight of the equipment. Larger and heavier panels need thicker sheet and bracing so that the enclosure does not distort. Ask the fabricator to advise.

How is the finish protected?

Commonly by pretreating the metal and applying powder coating, which is durable and uniform. For harsh environments, stainless steel or a heavier coating system may be used.

Can the fabricator also wire the panel?

Some fabricators supply empty enclosures, and others assemble and wire complete panels. Clarify who is responsible for the electrical work and for testing.
