What is an induction motor?

Alternating current in the stator creates a rotating magnetic field that induces current in the rotor, which makes the rotor turn without any electrical connection to it. The common squirrel-cage rotor is simple and tough. Motors are described by power, number of poles (which sets speed), frame size, efficiency class and protection class. They can be started directly, through a star-delta starter or controlled by a variable-frequency drive.

Induction Motor or DC or servo motor?

An induction motor is simple, cheap and reliable for fixed-speed duty, and with a drive it can vary speed. DC and servo motors give precise speed and position control, but cost more and need more maintenance or control equipment.

What to specify when you ask for a quote

  • Rated power, voltage, phases and frequency.
  • Speed and number of poles, and the frame size and mounting.
  • Efficiency class and the efficiency at the load you will use.
  • Protection class of the enclosure, cooling method and insulation class.
  • Duty cycle and starting method, including whether a drive will be used.
  • Bearings, terminal box arrangement, test reports and the warranty.

Frequently asked questions

What does the number of poles mean?

It sets the speed of the motor for a given supply frequency: more poles mean a slower speed. Choose the poles to match the speed your machine needs.

Why does efficiency class matter?

A motor may run for thousands of hours a year, so higher efficiency saves a lot of electricity over its life. Higher-efficiency motors cost more to buy but less to run.

Can I run an induction motor on a variable-frequency drive?

Yes, and it allows speed control and soft starting. Check that the motor insulation and cooling suit drive operation, especially at low speeds, and follow the maker’s advice.

Why do motors overheat?

Overloading, poor ventilation, low or unbalanced supply voltage, frequent starts or failing bearings. Correct sizing, protection and maintenance prevent most overheating.
