Flanges are forged to give a dense, strong structure that is suitable for pressure service. Common types are weld-neck, slip-on, socket-weld, threaded, blind and lap-joint flanges, each fixed to the pipe in a different way. They are made in carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel, and in pressure classes that match the pipeline, with the faces machined for the gasket.
A forged flange has a refined grain structure that handles pressure, temperature and fatigue better, so it is preferred for demanding service. Cast flanges can be cheaper for lower-duty lines, and flanges cut from plate are used for large sizes and low pressure.
A weld-neck flange has a tapered hub that is butt-welded to the pipe and gives a smooth flow and the strongest joint. A slip-on flange slides over the pipe and is welded inside and outside, which is easier to fit and cheaper but less strong.
It is a rating that tells the allowable working pressure at a given temperature, and the allowable pressure falls as temperature rises. Always check the rating at your operating temperature.
Material test certificates, heat treatment records, and any third-party inspection reports. Ask before ordering which standards and certificates your project requires.
