What is a plate bending machine (plate rolls)?
Plate is fed between rolls that bend it progressively into a curve. Three-roll machines have two lower rolls and an upper roll, and four-roll machines add a roll that holds and pre-bends the plate ends, which removes the flat ends common in three-roll work. Machines are described by the widest plate and the thickest plate they can roll to a given diameter.

List your companyPlate Bending Machine (Plate Rolls) or press brake?
A plate bending machine forms smooth curves and complete cylinders from plate. A press brake makes sharp, straight bends along a line, which suits angles, channels and boxes.
What to specify when you ask for a quote
- Rolling width and the maximum plate thickness, with the minimum diameter it can roll.
- Three-roll or four-roll type, depending on how much pre-bending you need.
- Roll diameter and material, and the drive and motor power.
- Controls: manual, hydraulic or CNC, and how the roll positions are set and repeated.
- Whether conical rolling is needed and the arrangement for it.
- Safety: guards, emergency stops and the support arms for large plates.
Where it is used
- Oil & GasTanks, vessels and pipe sections.
- ConstructionSilos, chimneys and curved structural sections.
- Industrial MachineryCylindrical shells and hoppers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a three-roll and a four-roll machine?
A four-roll machine can pre-bend both ends of the plate without turning it over, so the finished cylinder has no flat ends, and it is easier to control. A three-roll machine is simpler and costs less but needs more steps.
How is the capacity of a plate roll stated?
As the largest width and thickness of plate it can roll at a stated yield strength of the material and minimum diameter. Check that the figures match your material and the smallest diameter you need.
Can a plate roll make cones?
Many can, using additional features or setting the rolls at an angle. Ask the maker whether conical rolling is supported and how it is set up.
What affects the quality of rolled shells?
Roll condition, accurate pre-bending, correct setting of the rolls and the plate material. Good control gives round shells with small gaps at the seam.
