What is a shearing machine (guillotine shear)?

The sheet is placed on a table against a back gauge and clamped, and a moving upper blade comes down against a fixed lower blade to cut it. Shears are described by the longest cut and the thickest mild steel they can cut. They can be mechanical or hydraulic, and the blade gap and rake angle are adjusted to suit the thickness and material.

Shearing Machine (Guillotine Shear) or laser or plasma cutting?

A shearing machine is fast and inexpensive for straight cuts and leaves no heat-affected zone, but it cannot cut shapes or holes. Laser and plasma cutting follow any outline, with higher running cost for straight cuts.

What to specify when you ask for a quote

  • Cutting length and the maximum thickness in mild steel, and the reduced capacity in stainless steel.
  • Hydraulic or mechanical drive, and the type of beam: guillotine or swing-beam.
  • Blade material, the gap adjustment range and how the rake angle is controlled.
  • Back gauge range, accuracy and whether it is manual or motorised.
  • Hold-down system and the safety guarding.
  • Blade life and the cost and availability of spare blades.

Frequently asked questions

What is the blade gap and why does it matter?

It is the clearance between the upper and lower blades, which should match the thickness and type of material. A wrong gap causes burrs, rolled edges and faster blade wear.

What thickness can a shear cut?

It depends on the machine, and the rating is stated for mild steel. Harder materials such as stainless steel reduce the thickness it can cut, so ask for the figures for your material.

How long do shear blades last?

Blades can be reground or turned several times before replacement, depending on use and material. Ask the supplier how many edges each blade has and what replacements cost.

What safety features should a shear have?

Guards that prevent access to the blades, a safe foot control, hold-downs and emergency stops. Check what applies in your market.
