What is a distribution transformer?

Two windings on a laminated steel core transfer power by magnetic induction, with the turns ratio setting the voltage change. In an oil-immersed transformer, the core and windings sit in insulating oil that insulates and carries heat away. A dry-type transformer uses air and solid insulation and is used indoors where oil is a risk. Tap changers adjust the voltage, and protection devices guard against faults and overheating.

Distribution Transformer or dry-type transformer?

An oil-immersed transformer is generally cheaper and cools well, so it suits outdoor and large installations, but oil needs care for fire and leakage. A dry-type transformer avoids oil and suits buildings and indoor locations, at higher cost for the same rating.

What to specify when you ask for a quote

  • Rating in kVA, primary and secondary voltages and frequency.
  • Type: oil-immersed or dry type, and the cooling method.
  • Losses at no load and at load, and the efficiency level required.
  • Vector group, impedance and the tap changing range.
  • Insulation level, enclosure and protection devices, and the standards it follows.
  • Type-test and routine-test reports, and the warranty and service.

Frequently asked questions

What does kVA mean?

It is the apparent power the transformer can supply. The real power in kilowatts is lower and depends on the power factor of the load. Choose the rating to cover your load with headroom.

Why do transformer losses matter?

A transformer is energised all the time, so its no-load losses run continuously and its load losses grow with the current. Low-loss designs cost more but save energy over decades.

What tests should a transformer have?

Routine tests on every unit such as ratio, resistance and insulation tests, and type tests on a sample of the design. Ask for the reports for your order.

What maintenance does an oil-filled transformer need?

Regular checks of oil level and condition, bushings, breathers and protection devices, and periodic testing of the oil. Follow the maker’s schedule.
