Open-Die Forging manufacturers in India

Open-die forging shapes a heated metal piece by hammering or pressing it between flat or simply shaped dies, and is used for large shafts, rings, discs and blocks that closed dies cannot economically produce.

What is an open-die forging?

A heated billet or ingot is placed on a lower die and repeatedly pressed or hammered by an upper die while the operator moves and turns it, gradually forming the shape. The dies do not enclose the metal, so almost any size can be made, from small bars to very heavy shafts. The forged shape is then heat treated and machined, so open-die forgings leave more machining allowance than closed-die forgings.

Open-Die Forging or closed-die forging?

Open-die forging needs little tooling and suits large, simple or low-volume parts, with wider tolerances and more machining. Closed-die forging gives near-finished shapes and close tolerances in volume but needs expensive dies.

What to specify when you ask for a quote

  • Material and grade, with the standard it must meet.
  • Finished weight and dimensions, and the machining allowance.
  • Reduction ratio: how much the metal is worked, which decides grain refinement and properties.
  • Heat treatment and the mechanical properties required.
  • Testing: mechanical, hardness and ultrasonic testing, and any other tests.
  • Traceability from ingot or billet to the finished forging, and the certificates provided.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose open-die forging?

For large or heavy parts, low quantities or special sizes where closed-die tooling would not pay off. The work refines the grain and gives parts with better strength than cast ones.

What is a ring forging?

A ring made by punching a hole in a forged disc and expanding it on a ring-rolling machine or between dies. It is used for flanges, gear blanks and bearing races.

What affects the quality of a forged shaft?

The quality of the starting material, the amount of work put into the metal, the heat treatment and testing. Ultrasonic testing can find internal defects in large shafts.

How should I order a forging?

Send a drawing of the finished part, the material and standard, the properties and tests required and the quantity. The forger will propose the forging size and machining allowance.
