What are bronze bushes & bimetal bearings?

Bronze bushes and bimetal bearings are plain bearings that carry shafts in pumps, gearboxes, presses and heavy machinery. They are cast in phosphor bronze, gunmetal or aluminium bronze, often by centrifugal casting, or made as steel-backed bimetal parts with a bearing lining. The alloy and the machining accuracy decide life and noise. A bush is an inexpensive part inside an expensive machine, so a poor one costs far more in downtime than it saves. Specify the alloy and fit clearly, ask for certificates, and test a sample in service before ordering large quantities.

How to choose

  1. Match the alloy to the load, speed and lubrication: phosphor bronze for general duty, leaded bronzes for lower friction, aluminium bronze for heavy loads.
  2. Ask for the alloy grade and chemistry, and for a material certificate for each batch.
  3. Check how the blank is made. Centrifugally cast bushes are denser than static castings and suit demanding work.
  4. Specify the bore, outside diameter, wall thickness, tolerances and surface finish, and any oil grooves.
  5. For bimetal bearings, ask about the lining material and how well it is bonded to the steel back.
  6. Request dimensional inspection on a sample before volume production.
  7. Agree press-fit allowance and the final-machining step, in-house or at your site.
  8. Think about assembly: press-fit allowance, finishing after fitting and lubrication method, and ask the supplier whether bushes come finished to size or with allowance for final machining at your end.
  9. Ask how finished parts are packed, since bronze parts can be damaged or contaminated in transit if loose in a carton.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose centrifugally cast bronze?

The process produces a dense, uniform structure with fewer defects than static casting, which helps wear life.

How do I specify a bush?

Give the alloy, bore, outside diameter, length, tolerance, finish and any grooves, with a drawing.

What is a bimetal bearing?

A steel shell lined with a bearing metal such as bronze or babbitt, combining the steel’s strength with the lining’s low friction.

How do I know the alloy is correct?

Ask for a material certificate with each batch and, for critical parts, have a sample checked by an independent laboratory.

Can I order bushes to my own drawing?

Yes, most makers cast and machine to drawing. Provide the alloy, dimensions, tolerances and finish.
