What are industrial storage racks?

Industrial racks hold stock in warehouses and factories. Slotted-angle racks suit light and medium loads and flexible layouts, selective pallet racking holds palletised goods in a forklift aisle, heavy-duty and cantilever racks hold long or heavy items, and mezzanine floors add a second level. A rack is only safe when it is designed for the load per level and bay and installed correctly, so load ratings and installation matter more than appearance.

How to choose

  1. List what you will store: unit weight, dimensions, pallet size, quantity and how often items are picked.
  2. Choose the rack type: slotted angle for manual picking and light loads, pallet racking for forklifts and palletised goods, cantilever for long items.
  3. Ask for the load capacity per shelf level and per bay, shown on a load chart, and confirm it is for the beam spacing you will use.
  4. Check upright and beam section, steel thickness and the connection design, since these decide capacity.
  5. Review the floor: concrete thickness and strength, and how the rack will be anchored.
  6. Plan aisle width for the forklift or reach truck you use, and the clearance above the top level.
  7. Compare finish: powder coating or galvanising, and the thickness of coating for the environment.
  8. Confirm installation scope, safety features such as column guards, and whether a load notice will be fixed to each bay.
  9. Ask the supplier to mark the permitted load on every bay and to explain what to do if racks are knocked by a forklift.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know a rack is safe for my load?

Ask for the load chart for your exact bay size and beam spacing, and never exceed the rated load shown on the rack.

Slotted-angle or pallet racking?

Slotted-angle racks suit light loads and manual handling; pallet racking suits palletised goods moved by forklift.

Does the floor matter?

Yes. The concrete must be strong enough for the point loads from the uprights, and the racks need to be anchored as the supplier specifies.

What should an enquiry include?

The item weights and sizes, the quantity to store, the space available, the handling equipment you use and the number of levels needed.

Can racks be moved or extended later?

Many systems can, if designed for it. Ask whether components are standard and whether you can add bays later.
