PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to use the capability statement

A capability statement is a compact technical introduction used before a buyer sends drawings, schedules an audit or adds a factory to an approved supplier list. It should explain what the business can repeatedly manufacture—not repeat marketing slogans.

The most useful statements connect machinery and processes to an actual production range. They also separate quality systems from inspection equipment and describe capacity in units that a buyer can evaluate.

1

Define the core manufacturing fit

Open with the components, assemblies or services you provide, your location and the order profiles you handle.

2

Support claims with resources

List relevant machines, materials, inspection methods, certifications and typical capacity.

3

Make qualification easier

Name industries served, export markets and the information required to assess a new part.

Worked manufacturing example

Example input

Precision turned components from 8–65 mm diameter in carbon steel, stainless steel and brass, supported by CMM inspection and batch traceability.

What produces a useful result

  • Name machine types and useful ranges, not every asset in the factory.
  • Distinguish certified systems from customer-specific approvals.
  • Use monthly capacity only with a unit and product context.
  • Review the statement whenever machines or certifications change.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a capability statement be?

One or two pages is usually enough for an initial supplier introduction. Detailed machine lists and certificates can follow separately.

Is a capability statement the same as a company profile?

No. A company profile introduces the business broadly; a capability statement focuses on the evidence a buyer needs to assess manufacturing fit.

Should prices be included?

Normally no. Manufacturing prices depend on drawings, quantity, material, inspection and delivery requirements.
