PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to use the export checklist

Export readiness is not a badge and cannot be reduced to one score. A manufacturer may be ready for one product and destination but not another because standards, labelling, duties and documentation differ.

Use the checklist as a private preparation record. Confirm current classifications, restrictions and procedures through DGFT, ICEGATE, GST and the relevant destination-country authority before shipment.

1

Prepare the business

Confirm registrations, banking, payment controls, responsible staff and the ability to communicate across time zones.

2

Prepare the product

Document specifications, HS classification, destination standards, packaging, labelling and inspection evidence.

3

Prepare the transaction

Agree Incoterms, currency, freight responsibilities, insurance, documents, payment security and complaint handling.

Worked manufacturing example

Example input

Product: ductile iron castings · Destination: Germany · Classification and buyer drawing confirmed · EN 10204 material certificate required · export packing under review

What produces a useful result

  • Assess each product and destination separately.
  • Do not treat a buyer's HS code as final without checking.
  • Price the agreed Incoterm rather than using export price as a vague label.
  • Keep document names and quantities consistent across the invoice, packing list and shipping bill.

Frequently asked questions

Does completing this checklist certify a company as export ready?

No. It is an organisational aid, not a certification, legal opinion or customs decision.

Is one HS code valid in every country?

The first six digits are internationally harmonised, but national tariff lines and treatment can differ. Confirm the destination classification.

What should be checked before quoting an export order?

Confirm specification, classification, restrictions, certification, packing, Incoterm, freight, payment method, inspection and realistic lead time.
