PRACTICAL GUIDE
How to use the rfq builder
A manufacturing RFQ should let several capable suppliers quote the same requirement. Missing drawing revisions, material grades, quantities or inspection expectations lead to incomparable prices and avoidable follow-up.
This builder organises the technical and commercial brief before it is sent. It does not decide which manufacturer is capable; samples, audits and direct technical confirmation remain important.
1
Control the technical baseline
Name the part, drawing revision, material, dimensions, critical tolerances, finish and operating conditions.
2
Define acceptance
State inspection, test reports, certificates, sample approval and packaging requirements.
3
Give commercial context
Provide prototype, batch and annual quantities, delivery destination, target schedule and requested quotation basis.
Worked manufacturing example
Example input
Pump impeller PI-108 Rev B · CF8M investment casting · 500 pieces per batch · machining and dynamic balancing included · EN 10204 3.1 certificate
What produces a useful result
Send every supplier the same controlled revision.
Separate must-have requirements from preferences.
Ask suppliers to list deviations rather than silently assuming them.
Protect confidential drawings with an appropriate agreement and access process.
Frequently asked questions
What does RFQ mean in manufacturing?
A request for quotation is a controlled request asking suppliers to price a defined product, process or service against stated technical and commercial requirements.
What information is essential in an RFQ?
At minimum include product or drawing, revision, material, quantity, critical specifications, required delivery and the buyer contact responsible for clarifications.
Should a target price be included?
It can be useful when based on a real sourcing objective, but it should not replace the technical definition or force suppliers to hide necessary costs.
